Our Work

Guayaquil is implementing various strategies to reduce and prevent urban violence, such as:

  1. The implementation of the Cantonal Plan for Peace, Security and Citizen Coexistence of Guayaquil (PAZSECOG 2024-2030), where three objectives with several components are established with the purpose of developing community processes through the establishment of Governance and appropriating public space through the strengthening of capacities, adaptation of physical space and promotion of a culture of peace.
  2. Investment in video surveillance technology to improve security.
  3. Promotion of crime prevention programs that include recreational and educational activities for children and adolescents at risk.
  4. Promotion in the rehabilitation of public spaces.
  5. Development of community projects that promote social cohesion such as: The Network of women peacebuilders, the Cantonal Plan for the Eradication of Gender-Based Violence, Community Peace Committees, attention to cases of violence in Equity Centers and Justice and in the communities through a process of itinerant care.
  6. Partnerships with non-governmental organizations for the construction of the Gender Violence Attention Network, private companies and academia through the Mangle Inc. initiative, and the active participation of the community to address the causes of violence and offer solutions integral.

These efforts seek to create a safer and more participatory environment for citizens.

Challenges facing Guayaquil

Guayaquil faces challenges in peace and security, such as the high crime rate and violence related to criminal gangs. Rapid urbanization and population growth have also complicated the management of public resources and services. Despite efforts to improve security and strengthen social cohesion, these situations continue to be part of the community’s concerns. Added to this is the lack of a national public policy that is aligned with targeted local plans, programs and projects that contribute to a reduction in insecurity in the vulnerable areas of Guayaquil.

Achievements

The city has invested USD $7,721,338.13 in 2023 to begin the implementation process of Peace in Guayaquil and has allocated USD $53,724,740.76 to prevent violence and insecurity in 2024.
