Africa Regional Meeting

This regionally-focused workshop brought together PiOC member cities and representatives to discuss and explore topics such as gender-based violence, organized crime, and informal settlements in the unique context of Africa’s rapid urbanization and social change. The workshop included discussions and training sessions, as well as and site visits to Korogocho, Mathare, and Kibera that explored community-specific strategies of violence prevention.

Building off the strategies established during the meeting in Amman, Jordan, the second global convening of the PiOC network fostered a deep exchange of knowledge and strategic priorities. Network members identified addressing gender-based violence, improving community-police relations, and limiting detrimental exogenous influences in cities (for example, crises caused by national events) as topics for increased attention. Network members identified city-to-city exchanges and regional convenings as areas for priority investment. They also expressed a desire to continue receiving direct, tailored, technical support and engaging in multilateral forums, together with the PiOC Secretariat.

This retreat focused on the alignment and development of PiOC strategies to halve global violence by 2030. This first global member meeting focused on honing the network’s strategy based on members’ violence prevention priorities.
