Privacy Policy
Peace in Our Cities is a joint venture among Pathfinders for Peaceful, Just, and Inclusive Societies at New York University’s Center on International Cooperation, the Kroc School’s Institute for Peace and Justice at the University of San Diego, and the Stanley Center for Peace and Security. This site is owned by The Stanley Foundation (d/b/a Stanley Center for Peace and Security) and operated by the Peace in Our Cities secretariat (the three organizations listed above). Your privacy offline and online is of the utmost importance to us.
Because we gather certain types of information about our users, we want you to fully understand our Privacy Policy (“Policy”) and the terms and conditions surrounding the capture and use of that information. This privacy statement discloses what information we gather and how we use it, all of which comply with common Web standards.
In particular, our privacy policy is in accordance with current European data law, known as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which took effect on May 25, 2018.
Who We Are
Peace in Our Cities is a diverse network driven by its members’ need to address severe violence. We partner with cities and organizations around the world to achieve one bold, unifying goal of halving urban violence in cities by 2030. We network to reduce and prevent urban violence—preserving lives and helping cities thrive.
What Does “Personal Information” Mean?
Personal information is any information about you that identifies you or by which your identity may be reasonably determined.
What Personal Information Is Collected
The site operators gather and track two types of personal information about users:
- Information that users provide through optional, voluntary submissions. These include voluntary submissions to receive our electronic newsletter, participation in our events or in surveys, and certain submissions related to travel arrangements, expense reimbursements, or other payments.
- (Web site only) Information The operators gather both through aggregated tracking derived mainly by tallying page views throughout our sites and through individual tracking based on how you use or interact with our site. This information allows us to better tailor our content to readers’ needs and to help us better understand the demographics of our audience. Under no circumstances does the site owner or operators divulge any information about an individual Web-site user to a third party.
The site operators gather user information in the following processes:
- Information submitted by individuals through our Web site.
- Information given directly to our staff or representatives in a nondigital format.
- Information given to our organization that relates to events in which we present or participate.
- Information we find on our organizational social media page(s).
The site operators may collect more information about Data Subjects—like name, gender, or social media activity—by searching the Internet or querying third parties. The site operators only collect data that is publicly available or provided by a third party according to its terms of use. This information helps The site operators provide Data Subjects with information tailored to their interests.

How Personal Information Is Used
We use your personal information to fulfill the objective(s) stated within the consent we secure from Data Subjects when collecting their personal information. In addition, site operators use the information gathered in our log files to help us understand and evaluate our audience. By analyzing our logs, we can better understand which features of our Web site work well and which features may not. It also helps us evaluate how well we are reaching our audience. Sometimes site operators collect information in our customer relationship management (CRM) software about web pages you visit on our website if you have filled out a web form with your personal information. The information gathered is never shared with any other company or organization unless we first obtain your consent for such sharing. It is used exclusively by the site operators.
Do We Share Your Personal Information With Others?
Your personal information may be shared with (a) employees of our organizations in order to fulfill the objectives or goals stated in the consents we obtain when collecting your personal information, (b) vendors we use to fulfill the objectives or goals stated in the consents we obtain when collecting your personal information, (c) third-party organizations authorized by you to receive your personal information, such as hotels, airlines, and others where we seek to assist with travel reservations, and (d) vendors or other entities that may be involved in addressing amounts owed by the operators to you or by you to the operators.
Do We Share Your Personal Information With Others Outside Your Region?
For Data Subjects residing in the European Union, the people and organizations receiving your personal information from us in accordance with your consent may be processing it outside of your region. The legal basis under GDPR for this transfer is Article 49, Section 1(a) “Consent of the Data Subject.”
How Do We Keep Your Personal Information Secure?
We take all reasonable precautions designed to safeguard personal information that is collected or used by us from loss, misuse, unauthorized access, modification, or disclosure. To ensure that your personal information is secure, we employ several means, including:
- External and internal premises security.
- The requirement for all employees to enter into a nondisclosure agreement.
- Computer firewall protection.
- Restricted access to personal files and information.
- Computer maintenance to prevent unauthorized access.
- Document handling and shredding procedures with respect to personal information.
- Limiting access to your personal information.
What Are Your Rights?

Please note that if you withdraw your consent, this will not affect the lawfulness of our use and processing of your information on the basis of your consent before the point in time when you withdraw your consent.
In accordance with the GDPR (77), you also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority, in particular in the Member State of your habitual residence, place of work or of an alleged infringement of the General Data Protection Regulation.

How Long Do We Store Your Information?
The site operators store your information only as long as it is allowed under applicable laws and regulations.
How Do You Access the Personal Information We Store?

We will handle all requests as quickly as possible (and within any timelines imposed by applicable laws and regulations) and provide that information to you. Some requests may take longer depending on the nature of the request.
Children
We appreciate the importance of taking additional measures to protect children’s privacy. We will never knowingly request personally identifiable information from anyone under age 16 without requesting parental consent.
E-mail Policy
In some sections of our site, we may ask for personal information, such as your name, mailing address, and e-mail address. If you are under 16, you must have a parent’s consent to provide this information. Information gathered in any section will not be shared outside of the site operators.
Our e-mail outreach is permission based. If you received a mailing from us, our records indicate that (a) you have expressly shared this address for the purpose of receiving information in the future (“opt-in”) or (b) you have confirmed your participation in an event or otherwise have an existing relationship with us.
We may use the e-mail address you have provided to send promotional e-mails about new publication releases or events we think you may find interesting.
If you believe you have received unwanted, unsolicited e-mail sent via our system or purporting to be sent via our system, please forward a copy of that e-mail with your comments to [email protected] for review.
Each e-mail we send contains an easy way for you to cease receiving e-mail from us. If you wish to do this, simply click on the “Unsubscribe” link at the bottom of any e-mail, or contact [email protected].
Surveys
The site operators may occasionally conduct user and post-event surveys to better target our content to our audience. We never share any of this information about specific individuals with any third party.
Web Site Usage Tracking
Web Server Log Files
The site operators’ Web server, like most servers, collects information about visitors and stores them in log files. This information is gathered and stored each time the site is accessed.

- Errors encountered
Most Internet service providers (ISPs) use a dynamic form of assigning IP addresses. This means a visitor often has a different IP address each time he or she visits the site operators’ site. Many other ISPs (such as AOL) use proxy servers that further protect the anonymity of visitors.
Web Site—Cookies
Sometimes, the site operators’ sites use a “cookie” to more accurately track your visit. This is a small file stored on your computer that uniquely identifies your machine. No personal information is stored in a cookie. If you do not wish to accept a cookie from the site operators’ servers, you can adjust the settings in your browser accordingly. Refusing to accept a cookie does not affect how the site works.
Web site—Web Beacons
When we send you e-mails, we may include a Web beacon to allow us to determine the number of people who open our e-mails. When you click on a link in an e-mail, we may record this individual response to allow us to customize our offerings to you. Web beacons collect only limited information, such as a cookie identifier, time and date of a page being viewed, and a description of the page on which the Web beacon resides (the URL). Web beacons can be refused when delivered via e-mail. If you do not wish to receive Web beacons via e-mail, you will need to disable HTML images or refuse HTML (select “Text only”) e-mails via your e-mail software.
Web site—CRM
In some cases, if you have filled out a form with personally identifiable information on our website, we may track your visits to specific web pages in our customer relationship management (CRM) software. This happens through the use of cookies. If you do not wish to accept a cookie from the site operators’ servers, you can adjust the settings in your browser accordingly. Refusing to accept a cookie does not affect how the site works.
Third-Party Service Providers
We may employ other companies and individuals to perform functions on our behalf. They have access to personal information needed to perform their functions but do not have permission to use it for other purposes.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We monitor regulations, policies, and procedures to ensure that we are up to date with changes in the law and market practices. As a result, we will change this privacy policy from time to time.
